What Strategy Really Means (and Why You Probably Don’t Have One)

August 05, 20253 min read

Let’s be honest. The word “strategy” gets thrown around a lot.

Everyone says you need one. Every podcast mentions it. Every course promises to give it to you.

But here’s what no one talks about. Most small business owners think they have a strategy, but what they actually have is a to-do list, a few marketing ideas, or a bunch of scattered tools.

And that’s not the same thing. Not even close.

My Strategy, My Story

I used to confuse strategy with planning. I’d make beautiful color-coded schedules, set big goals, and try to post on five platforms a week.

But I still felt stuck. I was constantly working, but the results weren’t lining up.

That’s when I had to ask myself: what is strategy, really?

For me, strategy clicked when I stopped thinking of it as a list of actions and started thinking of it as the bridge between where I was and where I wanted to go.

It’s not just what you do. It’s why you’re doing it, how it connects, and where it’s taking you.

How This Helps My Clients

When I talk to clients, I see this pattern over and over.

They’re showing up. They’re doing the work. But they’re still overwhelmed, and their growth feels random or stalled.

That’s usually the moment when I ask, “What’s your strategy?”

And most of the time, they say something like, “Well, I’m trying to be more consistent on Instagram…” or “I just started using a new CRM…”

Those are great tactics. But they’re not a strategy.

Once we map out their big picture, their goals, their messaging, their customer journey, suddenly the fog lifts.

They’re no longer guessing. They’re building with purpose.

The Big Picture: Where This Fits in Your Strategy

A real strategy isn’t complicated. It’s connected.

It’s the thread that ties your goals to your marketing, your systems, your offers, and your schedule. It helps you stop reacting and start intentionally creating the business you actually want to run.

So if your current “strategy” feels like a never-ending task list, it might be time to step back and build one that actually works for you.

If you’re not clear on where you’re going, no tool, tactic, or trend will get you there.

Quick Questions, Real Answers

Q1: How do I know if I have a real strategy?
Ask yourself: are your actions clearly connected to your goals, or are you just doing “what you’re supposed to do”?

Q2: Isn’t strategy just for big businesses or long-term plans?
Not at all. Strategy is even more critical for solopreneurs because your time, energy, and resources need to count.

Q3: What if I’ve been in business for years and still feel scattered?
That’s common and fixable. You don’t need to start over. You just need a fresh look at how all the pieces connect.
